Photos that need identified

When working on the history books a few years back, I made a page for each person and/or family that I found from the area and was putting information about them as birth, death dates places, where lived, family members. That is all done for the people I found & the information that I found. I also have word documents with more information on the persons &/or families that we can use to double check information, etc.; these I continue to add information to. Then I have a file of photos on each family & community (Volney & surrounding communities) and these I continue to add to. I also have files of the photos that we scanned. I am working on organizing all of this to go on cd's. BUT from the history educator mentors (from history groups, universities, museums, etc.) that have been guiding us in putting together history books, they have told us over & over that we have to get more names to our group pictures to put them into any books; that just a few names won't work. I am going to try and upload to our Volney History Group Facebook site some more group photos that we scanned and hope some of you can give us names to the faces in them. Thank you all, for all your help. Please, continue to invite your family members & friends that may be able to help, that are not already members. Thank you!

Still working on when able to

Usually the winter is the best time for me to work on the history book materials, but the last few winters I have been too busy with things that I have to do here at home. Summer is usually when I a busy with things outdoors, etc. but this year with problems with my hands not working & hand brace, I am not able to to any yard work nor heavy cleaning in house nor much typing but I can do some researching to fill in blanks and double check for accuracy on what we already have. I got most done for the original books, that we were doing research for, while sitting with Dad & Mom during their last years. The individual ones (persons) that were going to get the books finished / published have passed away before they got it done; I am hoping someone else will still get more of the books finished. In the mean time when I can, I will work on continued proofing what we have, filling in blanks, and organizing it to put on CD's for each of the Volney Book Committee Members. While doing this, I am working on what materials that we have that go into the individual family history books (as I agreed with Tammy that we had too much for the Volney books and should save some for the family history books). I have groups that we are collecting information on for these families - Gleason, Thompson, Way, Bellinger, Newville, Knowles, Giddings.

If you have information or photos please post them the the correct Facebook history group.

We are still waiting for Don to have the valve replacement to his heart surgery and I need to stay around home with him, and not being able to do much because of my hands, it gives me time to work on all of this again.

Do you have a photo of a couple who lived in the area before 1985? Do you have a photo of them as a couple & do you have a photo of them with their children when their children were young & at home? If you do, would you please post it to this site The Volney-Beaver & Surrounding Area History Site, if you have not already done so. Thank you & God Bless you. We are working hard on pulling together the history of the people who lived in this area up to 1985. I will post this also on my wall so that you may share it, but we need the pictures posted to our Volney-Beaver & Surrounding Area History site in order for us to see them. Michal Livingston & Samantha Camp-Ovanlaisky will check into this history site from time to time looking for new photos. They are working on volume 3 of the history books & Nellie Way Dezinski is working on volume 1& 2; any photos that you gave to Nellie Way Dezinski or Tammy Bromley or posted on this history site, we do still have.

Volney & Surrounding Area History Books Blog Update and over-all summery of the whole project --

THIS IS NOT THE FINIAL COPY OF WHAT ACTUALLY WILL BE IN THE BOOK BUT IS WHERE WE ARE AT NOW; IT WILL BE LOOKED AT & ANY NEED CHANGES MADE BEFORE IT GOES TO FINALIZING!
Text Box: Volney & Surrounding Area History Books Blog Update and over-all summery of the whole project --

June 2, 2019
We had plans to have all shut-off dates for the Volney & Surrounding Area History Books done by 2018, with write-up in the spring & photos in the fall. There were a few last photo scanning’s that I had planned and contacted people on that Tammy Bromley & I had planned on doing last summer. I was not able to do them until this spring and we extended the time to get permission forms mailed in and photos posted to the Volney-Beaver & Surround Area Historical Site until May 31, 2019.
We have been working on these books for about five years and had planned on having them done before now. Different things have come up along the way that has caused us to have to extend the time to get photos and information in. In order to get these books done, we have to now completely cut off from collecting any more materials.
I did start the first part of January 2019 to pull things together for the books and I posted on our Facebook history site the names of people that we still did not have photos of. After June 1, 2019, I will go back through and put in the photos that we received by that time. It took me from January to the middle of May to get through all the names that we have. Our list of names is the list that I made about 4 years ago from old census records, cemetery records, and old plot book records plus a few other names were added as we found others that should be included. When I went through starting in January 2019, I was just doing individuals and couple’s photos; this time through I will add the family photos and add any photos that we have gotten since then. After finishing that which will take some time, I will go through and work on the community photo. This is all very times-taking, so will take some time to finish. With all this that I mentioned above I am just putting the photos that we have received with the names on our individuals/couples name list, which has some basic person information gathered by our book committee members and by Naomi’s office team, and basic photo descriptions. Even after that I will have to go back through everything, checking the information, checking which photos are clear enough for publishing, checking with book committee members to see if information/descriptions are correct, etc. This will take me, I would say at least a year to do as it is very times-consuming and I do not want to rush and make mistakes. Also, it is taking so long because we have so many names and so many photos which really is a good thing as we will be able to include so many different families now. I am so sorry that this is all taking such a long time. When I finish with my part which is the photos, then it all goes to Naomi’s office for her team to put the photos with the write-ups that different ones written about their families, and the write-ups that some of our book committee members researched and wrote. So very many people have been involved in pulling all this history information together. I want to thank all that has had a part in getting these books together. Naomi’s team will put the books together and get them all ready to be published.
Tammy Bromley and I, from time to time may be doing scanning’s for family history books that we are talking of starting to work on after we finish doing our part in getting the Volney & Surrounding Area History Books done. We are finished scanning for the Volney History Books. I want to mention this, so the scanning do not get confused. If we get enough photos we may be doing several family history books. Mine would include: an All The Gleason’s History Book (Encoh & Lovina Gleason Family), a Thompson History Book (Benjamin & Libby & Tamma Thompson Family), a Giddings History Book (Elisha & Philothea Giddings Family), a Knowles History Book (Charles & Wealthia & Hannah Knowles Family), a Newville History Book (James & Hellena Newville Family), a Way History Book (Anderson & Leanna Way Family), a Sanders History Book (Samuel & Mary Sander’s Family), a Bellinger History Book (Jacob & Elizabeth Bellinger Family), and a Harmon History Book (Daniel & Mary Harmon Family). These books will be just one volume each and not as many pages as the Volney & Surrounding Area History Books which will consist of three volumes of about 500 pages each.

If a family member did not turn in a write-up, there won’t be one in the books for an individual or couple. Michal Livingston, Naomi’s assistant found and put with each name (that she could find information on) some basic information. I made the list of names, Michal added basic information if she could find some, and I went back and added the photos that we have of each person. Michal is adding some obituaries, etc. if we have them. Joni Gerard is doing a lot of research with photos and obituaries and we may add some from there if we don’t already have a photo or obituary: this will be probably mainly for volume three. Naomi and Penelope (a friend of Naomi’s) are working on a book to follow our 3 volumes of the Beaver People (people of Beaver Township and others that lived along the Beaver Creek area). Our three volumes will be mostly photos and documented materials where their book is non-documented stories.
How did these books get started? I was interested in the history of the area and my family history who all traced back to this area, my father’s a couple of generations and my mother’s father back four generations and her mother’s back five generations (both her mother’s mother’s family and her mother’s father’s family); they were the first to settle in the Volney area. I also had been working with the F-H-C Educational Group (with Naomi mostly). They were using my DEL-A-LAC/DAL-A-LEC – The DEL-A-LAC Way materials that I wrote while working on my master’s and beyond master’s classes at Grand Valley State University. I started a Volney & Surrounding Area Historical Facebook Group to gather old photos and information. Naomi asked me if could pull it together for a series of history book as history curriculum. We used grants that Naomi got to get started. Naomi wanted to use the books to give to teachers when they came to Camp Dream with student to help them teach the area’s history to their students. At this time Naomi was an University Professor and Director of the small center in a town near her home in Maine. Camp Dream started out as a dream of mine for a camp for my students in Muskegon Heights and students of Hesperia were my daughter went. We own land in the area that I wanted to develop into camp. The gathering and organizing of materials for the books takes so much time that I couldn’t work on the camp dream, so Naomi’s F-H-C Educational Group took over leadership of planning Camp Dream. This book project has become so much bigger then we had first imagine and the Camp Dream project has become so much more than we had first imagine. Both are coming along great but they both are going to take a lot longer time then we first thought as they have both become so much more.
Summery of what is done & what we will be doing now –
·        I just finished going through our list of individual & couple names putting their pictures with their names & posting the ones that we did not have photos of yet (first of January -middle of May). Michal (Naomi’s assistant) had researched & put basic information with each name (over the last few years).
·        Tammy Bromley & I scanned some photos that we weren’t able to do as planned on doing last summer.
·        Next I will go through adding the family photos (starting after May 31). This will take some time as I will need to contact families on the names in the photo; most have some names with them but I need to check if we have the right names to the right individuals.
·        We will save all of this on a large back-up so the information is there for future projects as family books, etc.
·        Then we still have to go back through, double checking which photos are of the best quality to be used in the books and proof read the basic information.
·        Then it will be sent on to Christian & Michal where they will sort it all into the three volumes and put the pages together for each book with the adding of index, etc. Some of this was done a couple of years ago, but we have received so much more since then that we need to add to what we done back then.
·        Then it will be ready to go to publishing.
Again, sorry that this all is taking so long; we didn’t realize it would take this long when we started. It just took a long time to collect all the photos, information, & permission forms. A couple things came up along the way where what we were doing was confused with what other groups were doing as dates, etc. were very similar. So, to make it less confusing we decided to extend our date. This worked out in the long time good for us as other photos, etc. surfaced that will make the history books so much better.

Continuing to work on getting history book files ready for back-up!

Continuing to work on getting history book files ready for back-up!
To give you an idea of where we are at on the Volney & Surrounding Area History Books!
I just finished with #200 postcard; I got 150 done yesterday. In 2017, I took the names from Volney & Troy & Huber Cemeteries, then took names from old plot books & old census records, checked for those names in surrounding cemeteries & then put each of the names on a post card to later add photos & information. As technology & software continues to be updated, I now have to do a little fixing on each postcard to insure it to be able to be used with the updated software. We originally had 1,655 postcards for individual people, we have lost many people since then, so I am sure the number of postcards will rise. Many of the postcards actually have a couple on them, so really 2 people. After I finish with this, this huge file will need to be broken down in smaller sized files in-order to be backed up. After back up, we will go back & work on adding photos & information to each postcard. We also have a file of postcards for each family, for family photos and we have a file of postcards for each community in the area for community photos. These all will be put into the books with the write-ups under them that individuals wrote & turned in for the books.

Below is from Naomi

I came into town to the community building that has internet access. I only have a little time, but I want to add something here on the history books. Last week was my week to stay with my parents where also is the headquarters for our F-H-C Educational Services. This week my sister JoAnne is there. While there we started backing up the materials collected for the history books on a secure on-line site where all that are putting the books together have access to.
Nellie has such an abundance of great materials in files on her computer, plus on flash drives, external backup drives, etc. already. We want to be sure that we have the materials in different places in case of problems, the last thing we need is to loose these wonderful materials. We had several boxes of original photos, documents, copies of documents, journals, interviews, etc. including back up cd's & dvd's sent up to Michigan from Florida about two years ago; the materials were from homes in Muskegon Heights with a lot of the materials coming from information that was given to Bethany (Cornelius Bethany Jordan) from her mother & grandmothers friends (including Mary Newville Gleason, Nellie Quist of the Knowles family, Gladys Way, Vernas Walker Titus, McGahan Redding, Giddings, Thompson, & many other ladies that moved to Muskegon from the Volney area, I don't remember all the names.) These materials were to be sent to the Newaygo County Museum to one of your book committee members & she was to send on to Volney to Tammy BromleyShaun Hill, or Nellie the boxes marked for the Volney History Book Committee. Unfortunately the boxes never made it to Toni Tozer Rumsey or the museum & to my understanding still have not shown up. So with that all in mind, we need to be sure we have everything backed up in a variety of places. This backing up takes much time, but is very important. We still are hoping to have the books ready for the publishers by next summer. Even though we are taking what we have already received & putting the books together, please continue to upload your old photos to this history site, different ones will be continuing to publish other history books. Thank you!
Naomi

Below is what I (Nellie) posted on the Volney History Site a few days ago.
Volney Area History Books Update -- We worked at sorting materials for the Volney History Books, now we are working at backing everything up. I had lightening strike once & wipe out my computer, I had a photo that had a virus attached to it that wiped out all my photos, I had my external back up drive burn up loosing everything on it once, and with constant updated technology many of my old cd's can not be read so we want to be sure we have everything backed up in different places. We have received a lot of wonderful, marvelous materials for the books! Thank you, everyone! We also want to encourage everyone to continue to post old photos from before 1985 on the Volney History Site & the family history sites. Many of the files that we need to back up are very large files & back up will only do smaller files, so first we have to break the large files down into several smaller files! This is all going to take some time, but hopefully we will be done with the back up by the end of December. We also have some more scanning to do & we will have to contact some people to do scanning of photos that are not clear enough for photos. We still hope to have the 3 volume of books ready for the publishers by next summer. Nellie

NO VOLNEY HISTORY GROUP REUNION THIS SUMMER, BUT VOLNEY CHURCH IS HAVING A REUNION.

NO VOLNEY HISTORY GROUP REUNION THIS SUMMER, BUT VOLNEY CHURCH IS HAVING A REUNION.
Two summers ago we talked of starting reunions at Volney, that summer 2016 we decided to postpone it for another year. Then in 2017, we had the first reunion at Volney Church in the spring; we then said we would plan to have another one the following year at the Volney Farm on the corner of Dickinson & Lincoln. Tammy Bromley & I met at the Volney Farm last fall & figured out that there would be plenty of room for parking & for picnic tables, etc. I marked Sun. Aug. 26th as the date for the reunion on my calendar, giving us time to get things fixed up at the Volney Farm. About a month ago, my sister, Henrietta told me that the Volney Church was having a reunion sometime in Aug. & she wanted me to advertise it on Facebook. I told her that the Volney History Group was planning the Volney History Group Reunion in Aug. & to let me know when the church was having theirs. Tammy & I talked last Sat., May 26th. I had been thinking that it would be confusing with the Volney Church Reunion & the Volney History Reunion both in Volney in Aug. We decided we would cancel the Volney History Group Reunion for this summer & plan to have one next summer in 2019 when hopefully our history books will be finished. This will give us (Volney History Group) more time to concentrate this summer on finishing up things for the books. I contacted the pastor of Volney Church yesterday to see if they had a date for their reunion yet & it is Sun. Aug. 26th, the same date & time as we had for the Volney History Group's planned reunion. So, ours (the Volney History Group's) is canceled. I will plan on attending that one & I hope to see many of you there. I will have permission forms for our books with me if anyone still needs to sign one. Nellie
