Continuing to work on getting history book files ready for back-up!

Continuing to work on getting history book files ready for back-up!
To give you an idea of where we are at on the Volney & Surrounding Area History Books!
I just finished with #200 postcard; I got 150 done yesterday. In 2017, I took the names from Volney & Troy & Huber Cemeteries, then took names from old plot books & old census records, checked for those names in surrounding cemeteries & then put each of the names on a post card to later add photos & information. As technology & software continues to be updated, I now have to do a little fixing on each postcard to insure it to be able to be used with the updated software. We originally had 1,655 postcards for individual people, we have lost many people since then, so I am sure the number of postcards will rise. Many of the postcards actually have a couple on them, so really 2 people. After I finish with this, this huge file will need to be broken down in smaller sized files in-order to be backed up. After back up, we will go back & work on adding photos & information to each postcard. We also have a file of postcards for each family, for family photos and we have a file of postcards for each community in the area for community photos. These all will be put into the books with the write-ups under them that individuals wrote & turned in for the books.

I came into town to the community building that has internet access. I only have a little time, but I want to add something here on the history books. Last week was my week to stay with my parents where also is the headquarters for our F-H-C Educational Services. This week my sister JoAnne is there. While there we started backing up the materials collected for the history books on a secure on-line site where all that are putting the books together have access to.
Nellie has such an abundance of great materials in files on her computer, plus on flash drives, external backup drives, etc. already. We want to be sure that we have the materials in different places in case of problems, the last thing we need is to loose these wonderful materials. We had several boxes of original photos, documents, copies of documents, journals, interviews, etc. including back up cd's & dvd's sent up to Michigan from Florida about two years ago; the materials were from homes in Muskegon Heights with a lot of the materials coming from information that was given to Bethany (Cornelius Bethany Jordan) from her mother & grandmothers friends (including Mary Newville Gleason, Nellie Quist of the Knowles family, Gladys Way, Vernas Walker Titus, McGahan Redding, Giddings, Thompson, & many other ladies that moved to Muskegon from the Volney area, I don't remember all the names.) These materials were to be sent to the Newaygo County Museum to one of your book committee members & she was to send on to Volney to Tammy BromleyShaun Hill, or Nellie the boxes marked for the Volney History Book Committee. Unfortunately the boxes never made it to Toni Tozer Rumsey or the museum & to my understanding still have not shown up. So with that all in mind, we need to be sure we have everything backed up in a variety of places. This backing up takes much time, but is very important. We still are hoping to have the books ready for the publishers by next summer. Even though we are taking what we have already received & putting the books together, please continue to upload your old photos to this history site, different ones will be continuing to publish other history books. Thank you!

Below is what I (Nellie) posted on the Volney History Site a few days ago.
Volney Area History Books Update -- We worked at sorting materials for the Volney History Books, now we are working at backing everything up. I had lightening strike once & wipe out my computer, I had a photo that had a virus attached to it that wiped out all my photos, I had my external back up drive burn up loosing everything on it once, and with constant updated technology many of my old cd's can not be read so we want to be sure we have everything backed up in different places. We have received a lot of wonderful, marvelous materials for the books! Thank you, everyone! We also want to encourage everyone to continue to post old photos from before 1985 on the Volney History Site & the family history sites. Many of the files that we need to back up are very large files & back up will only do smaller files, so first we have to break the large files down into several smaller files! This is all going to take some time, but hopefully we will be done with the back up by the end of December. We also have some more scanning to do & we will have to contact some people to do scanning of photos that are not clear enough for photos. We still hope to have the 3 volume of books ready for the publishers by next summer. Nellie

NO VOLNEY HISTORY GROUP REUNION THIS SUMMER, BUT VOLNEY CHURCH IS HAVING A REUNION.

NO VOLNEY HISTORY GROUP REUNION THIS SUMMER, BUT VOLNEY CHURCH IS HAVING A REUNION.
Two summers ago we talked of starting reunions at Volney, that summer 2016 we decided to postpone it for another year. Then in 2017, we had the first reunion at Volney Church in the spring; we then said we would plan to have another one the following year at the Volney Farm on the corner of Dickinson & Lincoln. Tammy Bromley & I met at the Volney Farm last fall & figured out that there would be plenty of room for parking & for picnic tables, etc. I marked Sun. Aug. 26th as the date for the reunion on my calendar, giving us time to get things fixed up at the Volney Farm. About a month ago, my sister, Henrietta told me that the Volney Church was having a reunion sometime in Aug. & she wanted me to advertise it on Facebook. I told her that the Volney History Group was planning the Volney History Group Reunion in Aug. & to let me know when the church was having theirs. Tammy & I talked last Sat., May 26th. I had been thinking that it would be confusing with the Volney Church Reunion & the Volney History Reunion both in Volney in Aug. We decided we would cancel the Volney History Group Reunion for this summer & plan to have one next summer in 2019 when hopefully our history books will be finished. This will give us (Volney History Group) more time to concentrate this summer on finishing up things for the books. I contacted the pastor of Volney Church yesterday to see if they had a date for their reunion yet & it is Sun. Aug. 26th, the same date & time as we had for the Volney History Group's planned reunion. So, ours (the Volney History Group's) is canceled. I will plan on attending that one & I hope to see many of you there. I will have permission forms for our books with me if anyone still needs to sign one. Nellie

Things are really falling into place!

Things are really falling into place for your Volney & Surrounding Area History Books! I hope some of you can still identify some of the unidentified people in photos on the Volney & Surrounding Area History site so Tammy Bromley and Nellie Way Dezinski so they can get them into the history books. We are working on 3 volumes in a set. If you want an idea of what they may look like, look at the Newaygo County Museums One Room School House books. Hesperia Library, I am told has copies of them. For the Volney Area books - they will start with when people started to come to the area in the 1860's and go up to 1985. These are history books & will be of the past. The last volume will include memorials of person's that have passed away that lived in the area. About 3 years ago, Nellie took the names of people that were buried in the Volney & surrounding area cemeteries, names of people who owned land from old plot books, and names of people on the old census'. These she put by surnames into alphabetical order. Then she put the first names in under the last names & put in the pictures that were turned in; this she will have to update as all of you have been continuing to give her or Tammy more pictures. She also made pages for the different area communities, etc. Thank you all so very much for your photos and write-ups. These will be great books to preserve the history of the families of the area so that we can use them in educating today's youth & future generations. Christian Michal Livingston (Christian & Michal) will sort them into the correct time period for the 3 volumes & add the write-ups to them. They will sort out & remove photos of poor quality, etc. They will use as many of your photos as space allows. Tammy & Nellie will (after the Volney Community history books) will work on some individual family line books & use more of the pictures that they have collected in those books where there will be more room. Also, Nellie is getting training to do individual family books that are in color with room to enlarge your photos & anyone that is interested she will help you make your own colored family albums or photos to frame, etc. I am enjoying working with your group on these books & hoping sometime to meet many of you in person.

NEW for the Future!

We are working on some new things which will be connected to the Volney & Surrounding Area History Group.

We now need to give the Book Committee time to add their materials, now that they can see what has been turned in by the different members of the Volney & Surrounding Area History Group. During this time throughout this summer, when we can find time as we both have a lot going on with family, etc., Tammy Bromley and I are going to try to get a head start on scanning for the next projects which are some individual family line books. This scanning will be put on the back burner from time to time when there is work to do on the Volney & Surrounding Area Community Books (3 volumes). After the Volney & Surrounding Area Community Books go to publishers we will then work on finishing up the scanning of these other books. Both Tammy & I will be scanning for All The Gleasons & All The Giddings Books, Tammy is also interested in the Browns & Shaffer amongst others, I believe. I will also be scanning for the following family books, All The Thompsons, The Newvilles,  The Knowles, The Ways & Bellingers and I am not sure which other ones. We want to put these books together after the Volney Books and as we get enough pictures and information for each one. We have been working earnestly on the Volney Books for over 4 years, collecting pictures, so it takes years to get pictures together for the books. The family books, as each book is just about one family line may not take as long to finish once we are done with the Volney Community books.

Along this same line, I am going to be doing some training on putting smaller books together. These books will be more just for individual families, not family lines. These books will be fancier and in color. Some income will come from this and that income can be used to buy our Volney & Surrounding Community History Books to put them in the area libraries, museums, schools, etc.

We had planned a reunion in Volney this summer for the community & family reunions at our Volney Farm, but the Volney Church is planning a reunion in August, so we decided since our books won't be ready yet, we should spend our time on the books instead of doing a reunion and everyone that wants to can go to the Volney Church Reunion and we can have the reunion next year when hopefully our books are ready to be ordered.

When there is more information on the above and as the times are closer, I will share more information.

Nellie
